Last days of 2007

With only a few days of this old year left I feel reflective. What has the last year been? What will stay in my memory and colour my life for ever?

The year started with a walk across the fields of Harrogate, England in the company of my dearest friends, we got lost and walked for the best part of a day. The sky was clear blue the weather cold and crisp it was magical I will never forget it.

Most of this year was consumed with a new role, I coordinated the yearbook for the international school here in Hanoi and I learned how to be a teacher. The learning has been fascinating even if it took much of my time, it will feed my paintings next year.

My family have added pictures to my gallery of memories, Kate as director of the school production and BB on stage in an assembly where she described what had inspired her sculpture of a woodpecker and Mark was unforgettable as the shop keeper in "Little Shop of Horrors"

Other images that will stay, Brian Ring,s video. A Buddha is projected onto the wall of a building where a man is working, it is night time and the man is welding. The man is small the Buddha huge the night is dark and the welder sparks bright. Brilliant sharp observation of Vietnam as it grows and develops.

Sitting on a dike on the East coast of England with Dr Jane, we were painting together. Vast open salt marsh and fresh harvested straw in giant rounds.

Wading thigh deep in the flood waters of Hoi An central Vietnam. The sea came up the river and consumed the town.

Running along the Red River the dust and paddy fields.

Jim Goodall's funny elephants painted on Zou paper.
